Cavalo is pleased to announce the representation of the artist Sofia Caesar (1989, Rio de Janeiro. Lives and works in Brussels, Belgium).
Sofia Caesar uses dance and body therapy practices in her work. Through videos, performances and installations, the artist evokes physical states between movement and pause, activity and passivity, productivity and inertia, work and rest. Starting from an intimate perspective, Sofia has been building a thematic universe that activates the viewer’s body while referring to the pause as a powerful and active body state. Her work refers to the anguish generated by the effects of digital technologies on intimacy, supported by the theories of cognitive capitalism.
In recent years, Caesar participated in exhibitions in Brazilian institutions such as Centro Hélio Oiticica, Instituto Tomie Ohtake, Oi Futuro, and international ones such as WIELS (Belgium), M HKA (Belgium), SFMOMA (USA), A Tale of a Tub (Netherlands) , Moscow Biennial (Russia), Contour Biennial (Belgium), Bruges Triennial (Belgium), Beursschouwburg (Belgium), among others. In 2018, Caesar received the Rumos Itaú Cultural Award.
Caesar’s works are present in public and private collections, such as FRAC Pays de la Loire (France), Parco d’Arte Vivente (Italy), Jacques De La Beraudiere (Belgium), MAC – Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói, Itaú Cultural , and others.
Cavalo, in collaboration with the galleries Kubikgallery (Porto, Portugal), Periscópio (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), CASANOVA (São Paulo, Brazil), and the project space and publisher 55SP (São Paulo, Brazil), is pleased to announce the launch of ESPAÇO C·A·M·A in São Paulo.
The space is a new project of the C·A·M·A platform – collaboration between agents in the art market, created and organized collectively with the intention of debating on the accessibility and transparency of the cultural environment, the professionalization and responsibilities of its individuals, the maintaining the memory of extinct spaces and other necessary conversations. We unite with the purpose of sharing an unprecedented model of exhibition space in the circuit of contemporary art in São Paulo.
Our venue, located in a house in a modernist alley designed by late artist Flávio de Carvalho, will include an intense programme of group and solo exhibitions, events, and inventory by partner and guest galleries.
