Sofia Caesar | New Represented Artist

Cavalo is pleased to announce the representation of the artist Sofia Caesar (1989, Rio de Janeiro. Lives and works in Brussels, Belgium).

Sofia Caesar uses dance and body therapy practices in her work. Through videos, performances and installations, the artist evokes physical states between movement and pause, activity and passivity, productivity and inertia, work and rest. Starting from an intimate perspective, Sofia has been building a thematic universe that activates the viewer’s body while referring to the pause as a powerful and active body state. Her work refers to the anguish generated by the effects of digital technologies on intimacy, supported by the theories of cognitive capitalism.

In recent years, Caesar participated in exhibitions in Brazilian institutions such as Centro Hélio Oiticica, Instituto Tomie Ohtake, Oi Futuro, and international ones such as WIELS (Belgium), M HKA (Belgium), SFMOMA (USA), A Tale of a Tub (Netherlands) , Moscow Biennial (Russia), Contour Biennial (Belgium), Bruges Triennial (Belgium), Beursschouwburg (Belgium), among others. In 2018, Caesar received the Rumos Itaú Cultural Award.

Caesar’s works are present in public and private collections, such as FRAC Pays de la Loire (France), Parco d’Arte Vivente (Italy), Jacques De La Beraudiere (Belgium), MAC – Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói, Itaú Cultural , and others.

Launching ESPAÇO C-A-M-A, São Paulo

Cavalo, in collaboration with the galleries Kubikgallery (Porto, Portugal), Periscópio (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), CASANOVA (São Paulo, Brazil), and the project space and publisher 55SP (São Paulo, Brazil), is pleased to announce the launch of ESPAÇO C·A·M·A in São Paulo.

The space is a new project of the C·A·M·A platform – collaboration between agents in the art market, created and organized collectively with the intention of debating on the accessibility and transparency of the cultural environment, the professionalization and responsibilities of its individuals, the maintaining the memory of extinct spaces and other necessary conversations. We unite with the purpose of sharing an unprecedented model of exhibition space in the circuit of contemporary art in São Paulo.

Our venue, located in a house in a modernist alley designed by late artist Flávio de Carvalho, will include an intense programme of group and solo exhibitions, events, and inventory by partner and guest galleries.

Cavalo receives the prize for best stand of the ‘Opening’ sector at Arco Madrid 2018

The prize for the best stand in the Opening sector for young galleries was awarded to Cavalo at the Arco Madrid 2018 art fair. With works by Marina Weffort and Pablo Pijnappel, the Carioca gallery was chosen from 19 international venues in the sector with curatorship by Stefanie Hessler and Ilaria Gianni. The gallery directors Ana Elisa Cohen and Felipe Pena received the award from a jury of curators and art professionals. With only two years of existence, this is the second time the gallery receives a prize in an international fair, after the one for best stand in the sector ‘New Entries’ of the Italian art fair Artissima in 2016.
This year’s project features Pablo Pijnappel’s  video installation Sensuous Exercises based on two American bestsellers from 1968 and 1971 that teach men and women how to seduce their partners, resulting in frustrating situations when adapted for the contemporary Rio de Janeiro. Establishing a dialogue with the sensuality of these videos, Marina Weffort shows works from her series ‘Fabrics’, part of her research into the elaboration of compositions that move organically in the environment in which they are exhibited.
